How do you fire-separate a garage from an apartment above it?
IRC Section R302.6 requires minimum 5/8-inch Type X fire-rated gypsum board on the entire garage ceiling beneath habitable rooms and minimum 1/2-inch gypsum board on garage walls supporting the floor above, plus a self-closing 20-minute fire-rated door at the stair enclosure.
